@Trish—you do have to be careful. I had one reader who really seemed to feel betrayed by the twist ending in a murder mystery, and wanted there to have been more foreshadowing. It felt "unfulfilling" to her. (I'm not sure how much she reads within the genre, where twist endings are almost expected. I also had readers on earlier drafts who had the killer pegged by page 50. I'll post more about this later, too.)

I try and add suspense all through the story, but I love adding a twist at the end. This is a great post, Jordan. You’ve given me an idea to make my endings even more of a surprise. In my last manuscript, the reader has a moment before the surprise ending where they could guess what is about to happen. I’ll change that so they can’t guess at all. Then, wham! The surprise ending. I love that idea much better. Thanks for that.
