You ask us what do we think? It surprises me that Buddha uses the mind as a sixth sense. So it's a new challenge to
turn off expectation and memory and be -- through all of these sensual experiences. Barbara S

Oh! Something else just occurred to me:

Think about what you can convey through sound. I'm sitting safely inside my house right now, but the wind chimes on my front porch are tinkling up a storm. That conveys the setting—and the weather right now—actively, rather than just saying "The wind is blowing" or a clichéd use of sight to convey wind.

I didn't mean to say that sound requires an experience. Sometimes a phone just rings. I'm just saying when description is used, think about the experience rather than the actual quality of the sound.

If a phone rings in the woods, does anyone experience it?

Depends—which part of which movement of which piece of Bach's? And for that matter, which Bach? (Personally, I'd probably just say the common name of the piece, and stick with the famous ones.)

I agree that we're generally better off describing the experience, but a lot of sound doesn't come with an experience, too. A phone ringing doesn't require elaborate description or (most of the time) emotional context—still a sound.
