One of the so-called rules of deep POV is to avoid “head words.” Well, that’s not always true and here are two exceptions: to show how your character thinks and what other characters think.

Using “he thought” and “she knew” to reinforce deep POV can actually take our readers out of the story. Eliminate them to let your story shine through.
