D is for Do It Yourself

So I’d been all set to blog about disappointments in writing (no comment on why ๐Ÿ˜‰ ), when I came across this via fellow Crusader J.C. Martin’s blog:

the DYI MFA 2.0

We’ve talked about MFAs before. I love and hate the idea, since I really want to go back to school and hope to never have to work like that again ๐Ÿ˜‰ .

But a practical, self-guided, self-designed course to become a better writer? I’m all over that.

What do you think? What would you put in a DIY MFA course? Do you want to participate?

  1. Um…humm…school again? I think there is some value in taking a course from someone with more experience than I have. But MFA? I tried a PhD, but only made it a year and a half–I just didn’t care enough what my professors thought to do what they asked. If the MFA were a menu of self selected courses to meet the masters criteria, I might.

  2. Hi Jordan!

So glad you’re joining DIY MFA and thank you for doing a post about it on your blog!

I think the “MFA or Not” is a great topic for discussion and I liked what you said in your post about MFAs. Ultimately, it’s all about making a choice that’s best for you. This is what DIY MFA is all about. At iggi-U you’ll find posts to guide you through different aspects of the MFA (building a reading list, forming a critique group, etc.). The idea is that it’s possible to simulate the MFA experience without having gone to school.

Because while school can be great, it’s not always right for every writer. DIY MFA offers an alternative. Of course, you don’t get that sparkly piece of paper at the end of it, but then again, you don’t need sparkly pieces of paper to right anyway. The non-sparkly variety works just fine. ๐Ÿ™‚
